Magnifico Coffee Roasters x Siruma Origin Trip 2023
At Magnifico Coffee Roasters, every roast begins with family. Our story is rooted in Colombian soil and shaped by the people who nurture it — from the farmers who care for each coffee tree to our master roaster, Ricardo, whose craft brings their work to life here in Chicago.
In late 2023, our co-founder Adam traveled to Colombia to visit our sourcing partners, Siruma Coffee, and the remarkable producers behind our single-origin coffees. Through his journey, we reconnected with the origins of our beans — the landscapes, the families, and the shared passion that fuels everything we do. What he found went far beyond coffee. It reaffirmed why Magnifico exists: to celebrate the people and places that make each cup possible.
Roots and Purpose
Magnifico Coffee Roasters is, at its heart, a family business. Our Colombian roots run deep, and our connection to the country is personal and lasting. It’s where our inspiration comes from and where many of our most beloved beans begin their story.
Through our close partnership with Siruma Coffee, a trusted partner based in Manizales, we’ve been able to source coffees that not only taste exceptional but also uplift the communities that produce them. Siruma’s work extends far beyond trading coffee; they help farmers grow sustainably, improve quality, and strengthen local economies. Together, we share a commitment to building a coffee supply chain that values people as much as flavor.
The Journey to Origin
Traveling through Colombia’s coffee regions is both humbling and exhilarating. The roads are narrow and winding, often carved into the mountainsides—a reminder of how much effort it takes for a single bag of green coffee to make its way to our roastery. From bustling towns to quiet, mist-covered fincas in Tolima, Caldas, and Cauca, every stop along the route revealed the heart of Colombian coffee culture.
Each farm welcomed our team with warmth and generosity. Producers opened their homes and hearts, proudly sharing their methods, their challenges, and their hopes for the future. Many spoke about the unpredictable weather and rising costs that make farming difficult, yet their optimism never wavered. Coffee, for them, isn’t just a livelihood, it’s a way of life passed down through generations.
Meals were always shared, home-cooked arepas, stews, and laughter around a kitchen table, followed by coffee brewed by young baristas from farming families. Seeing the next generation take pride in their craft was deeply inspiring. In a time when many young people leave rural life for the cities, these moments reminded us how strong the spirit of community remains in Colombia’s coffee regions
Working with Siruma Coffee
Our partnership with Siruma Coffee is built on trust, transparency, and shared values. Siruma works side by side with producers, providing hands-on training from seedling to harvest, helping farms transition into the specialty market, and ensuring fair compensation for quality work.
What makes Siruma’s impact so meaningful is that the benefits flow directly back into the communities. Premium payments for specialty-grade beans are reinvested in tangible improvements: new drying racks, better equipment, clean water systems, and even school supplies for local children. Every cup sourced through Siruma represents a step toward resilience—a small but powerful contribution to a better future for coffee-growing families
Cupping and Learning in Manizales
One of the trip’s most memorable moments took place in Manizales, at Siruma’s cupping lab. Their team of Q-Graders — professionals certified to evaluate coffee according to Specialty Coffee Association standards — guided us through a tasting experience that revealed just how much skill and precision go into assessing coffee quality.
Sampling coffees side by side helped us understand how terroir, processing, and care transform a harvest into something extraordinary. It deepened our appreciation for the expertise behind every cup — from the farmers at origin to Ricardo and our roasting team in Chicago. Each sample had a face and a story behind it, connecting the dots between the mountains and our everyday work at Magnifico.
Reflections
This trip was more than a visit; it was a reminder of why we do what we do. At Magnifico, our mission has always been to bridge the distance between those who grow coffee and those who enjoy it — to bring people together through the stories and care behind every bean.
Coffee is not just a product; it’s connection, tradition, and shared purpose. Every roast we craft carries a piece of Colombia’s spirit — the dedication of farmers, the guidance of partners like Siruma, and the love of a family proud to call this work their own.
